Research Update for Toby's Foundation co-sponsored CHF Grant:
Efficacy of Cannabidiol (CBD) for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy
Dr. Stephanie McGrath, DVM, MS, Colorado State University
August 2019
We began enrolling patients for the study at the end of January 2018. We anticipated enrolling 20 patients per year; therefore, we are on track with 31 patients in 17 months. Additionally, we have started having outside clinics in Colorado help us in the enrollment process of the study. Local neurologists are conducting the study with CSU's oversight at their hospitals and general veterinarians are helping with the recheck appointments and blood draws. Our study has gained a lot of press, which has helped generate interest in the study from pet owners and veterinarians. At this point in the study, we have not encountered any obstacles. No adverse effects have been noted. For the summer, we had been fortunate enough to hire a summer research veterinary student from Cornell, Samantha Thomas.
Toby's Foundation has given $10,000 to sponsor a New CHF grant!
Dr. Stephanie McGrath at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
March 2018
Toby's Foundation is pleased to announce that we have given $10,000 to sponsor a new CHF grant for Dr. Stephanie McGrath at Colorado State University and for continued support of three other CHF grants that we already sponsor for Drs. Karen Munana, Holger Andreas Volk and Gary Johnson. You can read about these grants throughout this page.
We want to thank the Canine Health Foundation (CHF) for their commitment to canine epilepsy research and for matching our $10,000 donation!
Over the next several months more research reports are due in and we look forward to sharing them with you.
Interest is high in canine epilepsy research. In the past two years we sponsored seven canine epilepsy research grants for six researchers! One of these researchers is Dr. Hannes Lohi who got the first big breakthrough in canine epilepsy research and was able to develop a screening test for the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed. We are proud that we have sponsored three grants over the years for Dr. Hannes Lohi. Two of them we sponsored through (CHF) the Canine Health Foundation and the other one directly through Toby's Foundation with (ASHGI) The Australian Shepherd Health and Genetics Institute as a sponsor on our grant. When Toby's Foundation began almost 14 years ago there was little interest in canine epilepsy research. Toby's Foundation raised awareness of the problem of canine epilepsy and got people interested in pursuing canine epilepsy research. We work for the day when every breed that needs a screening test will have one and dogs that suffer from this cruel disease will have more effective treatment options. Remember what we learn from one breed can help others, both canines and humans! Same disease different species!
New CHF grant for dogs with drug resistant epilepsy
Efficacy of Cannabidiol (CBD) for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy
Dr. Stephanie McGrath at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
November 2017
Toby's Foundation is pleased to announce that we are sponsoring an important new research grant for dogs with drug resistant epilepsy. This new CHF grant is Efficacy of Cannabidiol (CBD) for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy for Dr. Stephanie McGrath at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The study will be a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial exploring the use of cannabidiol (CBD) to treat drug resistant epilepsy. CBD is a non-psychotropic part of Cannabis sativa plant.
