Greetings from Toby's Foundation,

Here they are! Six reports and 5 researchers! There is so much canine epilepsy research taking place right now, it's very exciting and most importantly, very promising!  Please help keep us moving forward in support of this vital research. We need your help! Please make the most generous year-end tax deductible donation that you can to help us continue the fight against canine epilepsy. We cannot do this without you! All gifts are needed and appreciated and are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law!

Research Progress Report Summaries

Toby’s Foundation sponsors these grants thanks to your generosity!

CHF GRANT: IDENTIFICATION OF A NOVEL JUVENILE MYOCLONIC EPILEPSY GENE AND ITS UNDERLYING DISEASE MECHANISM

Hannes Lohi, PhDThe Folkhälsan Institute of Genetics

"This project has been very successful. The study has enabled the development of a genetic test, which is now available worldwide from different genetic testing laboratories.”

To read more about this grant please see our research page.

CHF GRANT: INVESTIGATING A KETOGENIC MEDIUM‐CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDE (MCT) SUPPLEMENT FOR THE TREATMENT OF DRUG‐RESISTANT CANINE IDIOPATHIC EPIL

Holger Volk, DVM, PhD Royal Veterinary College, University of London

"The project will investigate whether supplementing the diet of dogs with drug resistant epilepsy with an MCT oil containing C10 will reduce seizure frequency and/or severity. We have made good progress after we have identified oil’s which have a good palatability.”

CHF GRANT: IDENTIFICATION OF GENETIC RISK FACTORS FOR CANINE EPILEPSY

Gary Johnson, DVM, PhD,   University of Missouri, Columbia

"This study has two parts. Part 1 is to first use the DNA from epileptic purebred dogs to produce whole genome sequences and to identify potential breed specific genetic factors that increase the likelihood that a dog will develop epilepsy."

CHF GRANT: STUDYING THE ROLE OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT IN CANINE EPILEPSY

Karen Munana, DVM, MS, DACVIM , North Carolina State University

"The investigators hypothesize that dogs with epilepsy have an altered population of lactobacillus species in their gastrointestinal tracts compared to normal dogs, thus influencing the course of disease."

CHF GRANT: CANINE EPILEPSY: GENETIC VARIANTS, BIOMARKERS, AND NEW THERAPIES

Ned Patterson, DVM PhD; University of Minnesota

"Our goal in these studies are to: 1. identify genetic (DNA) mutations associated with epilepsy and/or drug resistant epilepsy in Australian Shepherds, and Vizslas; 2. To see if blood micro RNA (miRNA) levels vary within epilepsy dogs and could be used as markers of predisposition to epilepsy and/or response to therapy; 3. To see if novel IV drugs (topiramate or allopregnanolone) might be effective for treatment of seizure emergencies in dogs (and people)."

MAF GRANT: USING ACCELEROMETERS TO DETECT SEIZURES IN DOGS

Karen Munana, DVM, MS, DACVIM , North Carolina State University

"The research team fits dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy with accelerometers (Whistle Activity Monitors) designed especially for dogs, then measure activity levels. While this study is on going with continued enrollment of dogs, the team has successfully documented the detection of seizure activity using the device.”

Please Donate to Toby's Foundation

Your gifts help us to support the research to find the genes responsible for canine epilepsy and develop a screening test and more treatment options for dogs suffering from this disease.

Toby's Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our Federal Tax Identification number is 74-3135217. Your gift is tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

Please check with your employer about a Matching Gifts program. If you would like to make a memorial or honorary gift to support canine epilepsy research, an acknowledgement card can be sent to whomever you specify.
