Greetings from Toby's Foundation,
Research Progress Report Summary
RESEARCH UPDATE FOR TOBY'S FOUNDATION SPONSORED CANINE HEALTH FOUNDATION (CHF) GRANT: STUDYING THE ROLE OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT IN CANINE EPILEPSY, DR. KAREN MUNANA, DVM, MS, DACVIM, NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
Fecal samples were collected from pairs of dogs, comprised of an epileptic dog that was not being treated with antiepileptic medication and a healthy dog from the same household that was fed the same diet as the epileptic dog.
Seven different species of Lactobacillus were detected. Detailed analysis is currently underway to determine the differential abundance of all microorganisms between the epileptic dogs and controls.
The median concentration of Lactobacillus in the epileptic group was 5.0 log10 CFU/g feces, while the median concentration in the control group was 4.3 log10 CFU/g feces. Statistical analysis is currently being performed to identify any differences in Lactobacillus species and concentrations between the epileptic and control dog pairs.
Antiepileptic medication was not shown to have a negative effect on the growth dynamics of Lactobacillus species.
RESEARCH UPDATE FOR TOBY'S FOUNDATION SPONSORED CHF GRANT: IDENTIFICATION OF GENETIC RISK FACTORS FOR CANINE EPILEPSY, DR. GARY JOHNSON, DVM, Phd, UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI, COLUMBIA
In part 1 of the study, work is just started on an eighth potential breed-specific genetic factor. in addition, we expect to evaluate additional risk factor candidates identified in the last five whole genome sequences.
As soon as the final five whole genome sequences from part 1 become available, we will add them our database of whole genome sequences and begin work on part 2. Initially we proposed to evaluate 15-to-25 candidate risk factors. We expect new alternative technology to enable the evaluation of twice that many epilepsy risk factor candidates. RESEARCH UPDATE FOR TOBY'S FOUNDATION SPONSORED CHF GRANT: INVESTIGATING A KETOGENIC MEDIUM-CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDE (MCT) SUPPLEMENT FOR THE TREATMENT OF DRUG-RESISTANT CANINE IDIOPATHIC EPILEPSY AND ITS BEHAVIORAL COMORBIDITIES, DR. HOLGER VOLK, DVM, Phd, ROYAL VETERINARY COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON
We could show that by supplementing the diet with MCT oil seizure frequency can be reduced significantly. We are currently doing sub-analysis, which we will share shortly. All metabonomics sample are planned to be run and the first analysis should be ready by the end of summer.

ASHGI Clinic at the 2018 ASCA Nationals
ASHGI will once again host its info booth, the DNA test swab clinic and research/CHIC blood draw at the 2018 ASCA National Specialty in Greeley, Colorado. Please support this blood draw as it is very important for the health of our Aussies.
ASCA DNA BLOOD DRAW: Tuesday Sept. 25, 8am-Noon. Place TBA.
Epilepsy Research (University of Minnesota) Samples needed from: - Dogs diagnosed with epilepsy.
- Healthy dogs over 8 years of age.
