Research Update for Toby's Foundation co-sponsored CHF Grant:
Efficacy of Cannabidiol (CBD) for the Treatment of Canine Epilepsy
Dr. Stephanie McGrath, DVM, MS, Colorado State University
We began enrolling patients for the study at the end of January 2018. We anticipated enrolling 20 patients per year; therefore, we are on track with 31 patients in 17 months. Additionally, we have started having outside clinics in Colorado help us in the enrollment process of the study. Local neurologists are conducting the study with CSU's oversight at their hospitals and general veterinarians are helping with the recheck appointments and blood draws. Our study has gained a lot of press, which has helped generate interest in the study from pet owners and veterinarians. At this point in the study, we have not encountered any obstacles. No adverse effects have been noted. For the summer, we had been fortunate enough to hire a summer research veterinary student from Cornell, Samantha Thomas.

Investigating a Ketogenic Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) Supplement for the Treatment of Drug-Resistant Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy and Its Behavioral Comorbidities
Dr. Holger Volk, DVM, PhD, Royal Veterinary College, University of London
We have identified interesting neurotransmitter changes in the urine showing that GABA might play a role in improving seizure control in dogs fed MCT. The untargeted metabonomics did not yield an interesting hit, but we have now just finished a targeted metabonomics run and are analyzing the results.
